The electric "Littorine" (ALe 790/792/880/882)
Aerodynamic EMU for regional services, with a look reminiscent of the prestigious ETR 200. Multiple generations built, generally gouped into pairs (one with 1st/2nd and one with 2nd class only). After a short series with both sides in an aerodynamic shape (ALe 792 / 882), it was decided to add passways for the next units, generating the two next series (numbered ALe 790 / 880). Units from the 2nd series had a passway on both sides, when units from the 3rd series kept one aerodynamic end.
1st series : ALe 792 and 882
Aerodynamic end on both sides. Smoldered body only. Built by Breda, showed by the 2 thousands range of the initial numbers (79.2000 et 88.2000).
1st / 2nd class : built in 12 units, ALe 79.2001 to 2012, then ALe 792.001 to 012 after WWII (with only 10 units left)
2nd class : built in 10 units, ALe 88.2001 to 2010, then ALe 882.001 to 010 after WWII (with only 6 units left)

Sliding doors installed in the late forties.
2nd series : ALe 790 and 880 with passways on both ends
Built by several factories. Units built by FIAT had an aluminium body, needing multiple visible joints, when the other ones had smooth soldered faces.
Aluminium body (built by FIAT) : ALe 790 001 to 022. Later converted to 2nd class only with the following numbers : ALe 880 101 à 116.
Steel soldered body (OM, Ansaldo, Savigliano) : ALe 880 001 to 034.

3rd series : ALe 790 and 880 with passways on one end only
Plannd to be built in numbers twice as big as the 2nd series, to build homogeneous 3 cars trains (3rd series - 2nd - 3rd), which was quite theorical. The last 2 units were not built (replaced by 2 former FIAT ALe 790 of 2nd series). Built by several factories, with the same difference (alu bodies with joints) for the units built by FIAT.
Soldered units (OM, Ansaldo, Savigliano, Breda) : ALe 790 023 to 068 and 880 035 to 100.
Aluminium units (FIAT) : ALe 880 070 to 090.

Le 640 and 680
Trailers built to be associated to the ALe 790 / 880. Dérivated from the Ln 664.1400, but with larger bogies permitting a higher speed and specific windows for the driving cabin. 2 versions built : steering trailers (Le 640) and middle trailers (Le 680)
Le 640 : 46 units ordered in 2 series (Le 640.001 to 046) later completed by 16 additional units (Le 640.047 to 062) which are transformed former Le 680.
Le 680 : 16 units without steering cabin (Le 680.001 to 016). Converted to additional Le 640 in the first half of the eighties.
