Battery EMU (ETA)
Germany
DE
German speciality.
ETA from before WWII
The prussian railways developped the concept of battery EMU. They survived to the beginning of the sixties, with a small additional series built by the DRG and 2 axles trailers. For all these trainsets (except the ETA 180), a number in the 000 series stands for 1st/2nd class, while the 200 series stands for 2nd class only.
ETA 177, 178 et 180
Prussian generation, trainsets made of two 3-axles bodies, 2 of the axles being grouped in the ends, under the battery sets. Some units had a third body, only one of them survived WWII.
ETA 177 : most modernized units, refurbished around 1950. More powerful and speedy (VMax upgraded to 75 Km/h) and multiple units steering. New body whend refurbished, with a signicantly different look for the batteries trunks. 26 units.
ETA 178 : partially modernized, able to multiple units. VMax 70 Km/h. 16 units with 2 bodies and 1 with 3 bodies.
ETA 180 : not technically refurbished (no multiple units steering). Some of them (a half ?) received a new body similar to the ETA 177/8.. ETA 180 001 to 020.
